For Foreign Service employees posted overseas, the Post Welcome Cables provide specific information regarding pet import and quarantine restrictions as they apply to persons on U.S. Government Travel Orders. These cables are available from the Overseas Briefing Center (OBC). In all cases, notify your post of assignment Management Office well in advance that you intend to bring a pet to post and confirm any pet entry and quarantine requirements. Meeting these requirements may take up to six months, so get an early start!

Make arrangements with your vet and get any documentation you need. The U.S. Department of Agriculture lists some International Animal Export Regulations; however, these do not include embassy-specific procedures. The Pet Travel site lists import information for about 100 countries. Also see the following OBC resource pages:

Research which pet products and services are available at post and which you should buy in advance and ship. See our suggestions for Pets and Pest Control.

Make preliminary plans for shipping your pet, carefully considering the itinerary and booking travel as early as possible. For more details, see the Chapter 9, "Traveling with Pets," from the Foreign Service Assignment Notebook: What Do I Do Now?

Foreign Service employees and family members are can become members of the Yahoo Group FS Pets. This is an excellent forum in which to ask individual questions and learn from others who have been through the process!
