U.S. Science Envoy Dr. Bernard Amadei will travel to Islamabad Pakistan September 21-29. During his time in Pakistan Dr. Amadei will draw on Pakistan’s strengths and capacity in science, technology and engineering (STE) to further connections to the global knowledge-based economy. Focusing on engineering for development, he will deliver a keynote speech at the World Engineering Congress, participate in the launch of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Pakistan, and convene representatives of government, research and educational institutions, industry, and NGOs for a two day workshop on STE for Development (STE4D). This is Dr. Amadei’s second trip to Pakistan as a U.S. Science Envoy.

Dr. Amadei is Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is the Director of the Mortenson Center in Engineering for Developing Communities at CU Boulder and holds the Mortenson Endowed Chair in Global Engineering. Dr. Amadei is also the Founding President of Engineers Without Borders - USA and the co-founder of the Engineers Without Borders-International network. Among other distinctions, Dr. Amadei is a 2007 co-recipient of the Heinz Award for the Environment, the recipient of the 2008 Engineering News-Record (ENR) Award of Excellence, and an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He received his Ph.D. in 1982 from the University of California at Berkeley

The U.S. Science Envoy Program is a core element of the Administration’s commitment to global engagement in science and technology. President Obama announced the program in Cairo in June 2009. Since the program’s inception, Science Envoys have visited 21 countries. Dr. Amadei is the first Science Envoy to convene a workshop.

The Science Envoys travel in their capacity as private citizens and share the insights they gain from their travels with the U.S. scientific community. These exchanges contribute to further cooperation with partners overseas.
