QUESTION: Why is there not a high-level U.S. representative at the defense conference in Taiwan as in previous years? Is the absence of a high-level U.S. government representative a reaction to Taiwan's recent action on the Senkakus?

ANSWER: The conference in question is a private industry event and not an official event.

The State Department has regular and robust interactions with Taiwan authorities at various levels. Our channels of communication and our cooperation with Taiwan remain significant, consistent with long-standing U.S. policy.

A senior-level State Department official was not available to speak at this event due to scheduling conflicts. However, several State Department representatives are attendiing.
