Maria’s story reflects the American melting pot and vibrant immigrant culture of her hometown. Maria shares Mexican roots as well as Slovakian. Her family also has roots in the U.S. South, East, and Midwest thanks to the steel mills industry.

Since joining the Foreign Service in 1996, Maria has served in the following posts and positions: in Lagos, Nigeria as consular/economic officer; in Freetown, Sierra Leone as general services/political officer; in Mumbai, India as management officer; in Washington, DC as special assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Administration and then special assistant to the Under Secretary for Management; in Colombo, Sri Lanka as management officer; in Islamabad, Pakistan as management officer; and in the Bureau of African Affairs Executive Office as the supervisory post management officer.

In 2010, Maria earned a master of science degree in National Resource Strategy at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, part of the National Defense University. She received her undergraduate degree in international economics and cultural affairs from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana.
