The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs will host “Around the World in an Afternoon,” the second annual cultural and academic festival featuring Study of the U.S. Institutes participants. The Institutes bring scholars and student leaders from around the globe to the United States for five to six week intensive academic programs.

On Thursday, July 26, 2012, the festival will bring together 156 students and 18 scholars from 32 countries at the Department of State. Through traditional dress, photos, cultural artifacts, and informal interactions with guests, the students who are attending one of five Study of the U.S. Institutes for Student Leaders will showcase their home countries and cultures. Scholars participating in a Study of the U.S. Institute for Scholars will present their current research through an academic poster session. Department of State employees and guests will have the opportunity to interact with the Study of the U.S. Institutes participants and learn from them about their cultures and research.

The event is open to the press and will take place in the Exhibit Hall of the Harry S Truman Building (2201 C St, NW, Washington, DC) from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Interviews with a U.S. Department of State spokesperson and students can be arranged upon request.

Study of the U.S. Institutes provide opportunities for both foreign undergraduate students and foreign scholars of the United States to participate in intensive exchange programs based on themes around their interest or expertise. During their time, they also participate in community service events and are exposed to U.S. culture and diversity. Themes for Institutes include: new media, religious pluralism in the United States, global environmental issues, American political systems, in addition to others.
