On June 29, 2012, representatives from the international community will convene in Chisinau for the first All Member Coordination Meeting since the launch of the Community of Democracies’ Moldova Task Force. Natalia Gherman, the Republic of Moldova’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and European Integration, will host the meeting on behalf of the Government of Moldova. Mr. Jerzy Pomianowski, Under Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, and Mr. William H. Moser, the United States Ambassador to Moldova, will represent Poland and the United States respectively as co-chairs of the Task Force.

The Moldova Task Force was announced in July 2011 at the Vilnius Ministerial of the Community of Democracies and held its inaugural meeting in December 2011 in Washington, D.C. The Task Force is part of a new mechanism to support emerging democracies by providing multilateral support for reforms in countries undergoing promising transitions. Moldova was selected for task force assistance as part of a competitive process, based on its commitment to consolidating democratic gains and its potential for future progress.

The Moldova Task Force demonstrates the newly enhanced role of the Community of Democracies as a platform for cooperation among democracies worldwide. This initiative underscores its members’ common commitment for democracy and good governance. The Task Force is channeling assistance to help the people and government of Moldova undertake crucial reforms, including those which will develop the country’s economy, instill rule of law, and build effective, accountable institutions.

The June 29 coordination meeting provides an opportunity to chart a roadmap to success in each of the sectors where the Task Force is engaged – justice sector reform, security and defense sector reform, local governance, transparency and e-governance, and migration policies – in close consultation with representatives from Moldova’s government and civil society. The Task Force will report its progress at the upcoming meeting of the Community of Democracies’ Governing Council on July 9 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
