Date: 06/01/2012 Description: 2012 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month: David Mahan - State Dept Image As the assigned Hanoi Foreign Service health practitioner (FSHP), David Mahan is a physician assistant by profession and has been a medical practitioner and board certified since 1993. David delivers medical care overseas as guided by the Office of Medical Services (MED). David's current post is U.S. Embassy Hanoi, covering Embassy staff in the country of Viet Nam and part of his responsibilities includes guiding health care delivery at clinics in both Hanoi Embassy and Ho Chi Minh City consulate. David works with health unit teams to provide quality treatment and medical advice to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh Cities staff personnel and their families.

David has been working for the Department of State for approximately 7 years. During that time he has been posted in Ndjamena, Chad (2005-2007); Ashgabat, Turkmenistan (2007-2009); Kabul, Afghanistan (2009-2011); and now Hanoi (2011-2013). David also has been trained as an equal employment opportunity (EEO) counselor and served at all of his posts to ensure staff has support for any EEO issues.

David is currently in a committed relationship with the love of his life. They have been together for over 15 months and have enjoyed this current posting. They have been able to relax and have enjoyed periodic travels to other Asian locales including visits to rural Viet Nam, Thailand, and Cambodia. They are focused on Asia due to his partner's limited travel experience outside of his native Lao home. David's work experience before the Department of State included working at East Carolina University Medical Center and before that he retired from the United States Navy after serving for approximately 29 years.
