Press Statement
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
May 30, 2012

I want to congratulate Neera Tanden on receiving the India Abroad Person of the Year award.

Neera worked for me and with me for many years, from my time as First Lady, to my tenure as Senator for the great state of New York and during my presidential campaign. She consistently provided me with smart advice on major policy issues. And as President of the Center for American Progress, a leading think tank that is providing new policy ideas to move the country in a progressive direction, she and CAP are sharing sage advice to policy leaders in Washington.

Neera has had an unusual path and a wide and varied career. She is an able role model for many Americans, including Indian Americans.

I also want to thank India Abroad and the leadership of the Indian community that has come together tonight. India Abroad has been a voice for the Indian community in this country for decades, and as that community grows larger, India Abroad has been there to highlight its successes and encourage its greater participation.

As Secretary of State and throughout my career, I have seen the critical role the Indian diaspora is playing in the United States and throughout the world. I want to applaud that engagement and hope that you will continue to be a voice for diversity, tolerance, and hard work, all values both Neera and India Abroad espouse and personify.
