Question Taken at the May 10, 2012 Daily Press Briefing

Question: Did the United States send observers to the recent Algerian elections?

Answer: The State Department’s Office of the U.S. – Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) provided the National Democratic Institute (NDI) funding to send a team of observers to monitor the Algerian elections. NDI observed and reported on the pre-election period, is reporting on the conduct of voting on election-day, and will monitor the immediate post-election environment. The findings will be publicized, and a series of follow-up meetings and consultations with Algerian election officials are being planned.
