Special Advisor for Disability Rights Judy Heumann of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, in cooperation with USAID, will host a major civil society conference on international disability rights, May 9-10 at 9:00 a.m., in the Loy Henderson conference room at the U.S. Department of State. Speakers include Assistant Secretary for Human Rights Michael Posner, Department of State Legal Adviser Harold Hongju Koh, and White House Special Assistant Samantha Power.

The conference will identify challenges and opportunities for collaboration of international disability rights promotion, particularly in support of implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The conference will involve leaders of key civil society organizations engaged in international human rights and development work.

Following the conference, there will be a consultation with the International Disability Alliance and other civil society groups. In addition, Department of State officials will discuss the promotion of international disability rights.

The event is open to credentialed members of the media.

Pre-set time for cameras: 8:00 a.m. from the 23rd Street Entrance
Final access time for journalists and still photographers: 8:45 a.m. from the 23rd Street Entrance

Media representatives may attend this event upon presentation of one of the following: (1) A U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification card (driver's license, passport).
