Date: 11/15/2011 Description: Celebrating Veterans Day 2011: Steven DuBose - State Dept ImageSteven DuBose joined the Department in 1974 at 18 years old. He stayed for a few months and decided to take a military furlough and join the Air Force for four years. Steven was stationed on an old SAC base in Minot, North Dakota for the whole 4 years of enlistment. Steven was a part an elite Security Alert Team that patrolled numerous LCFs (launch control facilities) by ground and air, controlling over 150 nuclear-tipped Minuteman ICBM missiles. "When you’re 18 years old I guess you really don’t think about the enormous amount of responsibility entrusted to you at such a young age." All Steven knew at the time was that it was real cold -- colder than any place he had ever been and he was riding around in the middle of nowhere in the dead of winter… Steven had the best time of his life and made some great friends, some of which he is still in contact with today.

Steven is on the verge of retirement and has loved every minute of his career at State. He started off in the old Mail and Pouch room as a messenger zipping through the hallways in those huge green mail trucks. Steven has worked in African Affairs, Personnel (HR), and for the last 27 years in IRM. Steven will always regard his experiences here at State as what helped to define him as a person. He grew up in some turbulent times in DC and as an adult his work at State would always be the steady influence in his life during good and bad times. It has been Steven's second home for over 37 years. The people and memories will last a lifetime…
