Date: 11/15/2011 Description: Celebrating Veterans Day 2011: Bill Hayes - State Dept ImageBill Hayes served in the United States Marine Corps as an M1A1 tank crewman from July, 2001 to July, 2005. He achieved the rank of sergeant and deployed to the Middle East twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On his first tour he served as a tank loader during the invasion of Iraq in March, 2003. On his second tour he served as a tank gunner during the Battle of Fallujah in November, 2004.

After being honorably discharged from the Marines, Bill enrolled at the University of Georgia, and during his senior year in 2008 he interned in the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs. After graduation, he was accepted into the Department’s Career Entry Program (CEP) as a program analyst in the Bureau of Administration’s Executive Office. While in the CEP he performed details in several bureaus, and has traveled to Lisbon, Portugal and Warsaw, Poland in support of the Department.

Lastly, his service decorations include the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Achievement Medal with combat distinguishing device, and the Iraq Campaign Medal.
