James Vandenberg has been working at the US Department of State in the Overseas Buildings Operations Bureau (OBO) since October 2010 after coming off active duty. In this capacity he functions as a Foreign Service Construction Executive (FSCE) providing construction management services to Embassies and Consulates under construction. He is assigned to the EUROPE Branch (EUR) with an ongoing portfolio of approximately 12-15 projects assisting in the construction administration of projects under construction, and design assistance on constructability on new projects. Current projects include New Embassy Compounds (NECs) in Valletta, Malta, Belgrade, Serbia, The Hague, Netherlands; New Office Annex in Moscow, Russia; Lease Fit Outs in Vienna, Austria for Office of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and Brussels, Belgium for North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Consular Rehabs in Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich, Dusseldorf, Germany, Florence and Rome, Italy. Chief of Mission Residence Rehabilitations in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, and Prague, Czech Republic.

Prior military service was with the US Navy Seabees in Al Anbar, Iraq in 2004, Sulu Archipelago, Philippines in 2005-06, Kabul, Afghanistan in 2008, Rotovoto, Kosovo in 2008. Jim is currently a Commander in the US Navy Reserve assigned to FIRST Naval Construction Regiment in Port Hueneme, California.
