Syria: Attack on Ambassador Ford and U.S. Embassy Personnel (Taken Question)
Question: Will the United States submit a bill to the Syrian Government for damage that occurred to its vehicles during today’s attack against Ambassador Ford and U.S. Embassy personnel? Did the Syrian Government pay the last bill submitted for damage caused to the U.S. Embassy? Did the U.S. Embassy raise today’s incident with the Syrian Government and at what level?
Answer: We have demanded full compensation from the Syrian Government for damages inflicted on U.S. government vehicles during the September 29 violent attack against Ambassador Ford and U.S. Embassy personnel in Damascus. We expressed our disgust with this attack, and the Syrian Government’s failure to prevent it or adequately respond to it, with the highest levels of the Syrian Government, including Ambassador Robert Ford with Vice Foreign Minister Miqdad in Damascus and Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman with Ambassador Moustapha in Washington.
In July, we requested prompt and full compensation for damage inflicted on our Embassy and other U.S. diplomatic property as a result of a July 11 pro-regime mob attack on our diplomatic mission in Damascus. We continue to demand full compensation from the Syrian Government for the damage caused during both attacks.
