Egypt: Postponement of EXERCISE BRIGHT STAR (Taken Question)
Question: The upcoming U.S.-Egypt joint military exercises were cancelled. If the United States cancelled these exercises, where and when was this conveyed to the Egyptian government?
Answer: The Egyptian Government and the United States mutually agreed to postpone the 2011 exercise in light of ongoing transition events. The decision was reached as part of our routine bilateral conversations. Egypt and the United States also agreed to commence formal planning in June 2012 for the next installment of EXERCISE BRIGHT STAR in 2013.
EXERCISE BRIGHT STAR is a biennial, multinational exercise sponsored by U.S. Central Command designed to strengthen military-to-military relationships and improve readiness and interoperability among U.S., Egyptian and other coalition forces, including France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
