Question Taken at the July 8, 2011 Daily Press Briefing
July 8, 2011

Question: Is Syrian Ambassador Mustapha required to notify the State Department prior to traveling within the United States as a result of Syria being on the U.S. list of State Sponsors of Terrorism?

Answer: The United States does not restrict Ambassador Mustapha’s travel throughout the country and he is not required to obtain permission prior to traveling. Diplomats accredited to the United States from countries listed as state sponsors of terrorism are not automatically subject to travel restrictions in the United States. Instead, restrictions on the travel of foreign diplomats within the United States are imposed by the Department of State on a case-by-case basis, depending on various factors, such as national security and reciprocity.
