Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Judith A. McHale will travel to San Francisco, California, March 23-25th, 2011.

During her visit to California, Under Secretary McHale will take part in The Global Technology Symposium, a leading investment conference on technology and entrepreneurship in emerging markets, and will participate in a virtual exchange program between Pakistani and American students.

On March 24, 2011, Under Secretary McHale will give remarks during the opening ceremony of The Global Technology Symposium to participants, including corporate leaders, policy makers and management and technology experts. The symposium will promote shared insights into the opportunities and challenges of globalization. Lorraine Hariton, U.S. Department of State Special Representative for Commercial and Business Affairs, will also be attending the conference and will moderate a panel discussion entitled “Beyond the BRICs.”

On the evening on March 24, 2011, Under Secretary McHale will visit Central Community School/Peabody Academy in Redwood City, California, to take part in a Skype call between students from the United States and Pakistan. Under Secretary McHale will discuss how "virtual exchanges" can be an integral part of public diplomacy. American students from Central Community School/Peabody Academy, alongside Pakistani students from Karachi and Islamabad, will explore how students in the two countries act as producers of knowledge/news/media, and the impact this new role will have on youth engaged in new media and journalism.
