UN Ambassador Rice (Dec. 14): "Good evening. I'm going to read a statement on behalf of the Security Council on the passing of Richard Holbrooke. The members of the Security Council are deeply saddened by the passing yesterday of their colleague, and an extraordinary American diplomat, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke. They noted that Ambassador Holbrooke's service spanned decades and continents, confronting profoundly difficult issues in global affairs. The members of the Council expressed admiration for his contributions as the United State's permanent representative to the United Nations, as well as for his energetic and unrelenting commitment to promoting peace and strengthening international cooperation at the United Nations. The members of the Security Council express their deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of Ambassador Holbrooke. In particular his wife, Kati Marton and their family, David, Anthony, Elizabeth and Christopher, as well as to the people of the United States and to the friends of Richard Holbrooke around the world. Thank you." Full Text»
