U.S. State Department Under Secretary William J. Burns and Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs State Secretary Peter Maurer met on November 18 in Washington, D.C. to discuss bilateral and global issues. The meeting took place within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Switzerland and the United States in May 2006 to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two governments. In parallel, senior officials of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation and the U.S. Department of State had meetings to discuss issues of common interest.

On May 11, 2006, Switzerland and the United States signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a Framework for Intensified Cooperation. The MOU reflects the will of both countries to expand their dialogue on all issues of mutual interest and to strengthen the bilateral relationship.

The MOU establishes a policy dialogue through regular meetings between the Swiss State Secretary and the U.S. Under Secretary for Political Affairs. A Joint Working Group of senior officials of both governments supports and implements the policy dialogue.

The annual meetings of the Joint Working Group enrich an ongoing consultative exchange to identify fields for cooperation and concrete coordination in addressing a range of global challenges.
