United States -Japan 2010 Joint Projects in APEC

Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton and Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara are pleased to report concrete and substantive progress on the four signature U.S.-Japan APEC initiatives announced in March 2010 in Ottawa:

• Food Security: The October 16-17 Food Security Ministerial in Niigata, Japan, produced a Ministerial Declaration and Action Plan that provide a strategic foundation for continued close coordination between the United States and Japan on food security issues.
• Gender Issues: In October Japan and the United States co-hosted the first ever Women’s Entrepreneurship Summit in Gifu, Japan, bringing together over 300 participants from the 21 APEC economies and promoting entrepreneurship and leadership for women in business and government throughout the region.
• Climate Change: In September 2010, APEC sponsored a successful policy dialogue on the concept of "Green Growth," identified as a key tenet of "Sustainable Growth" in the APEC Leaders' Growth Strategy. The United States and Japan are developing a joint APEC project to help vulnerable economies in the Asia-Pacific region tackle the challenges associated with climate change.
• Emergency Preparedness: Japan and the United States are working to enhance emergency preparedness in APEC economies by facilitating private-public partnerships and strengthening emergency management networks. Japan and the United States are exchanging best practices and will jointly sponsor a workshop next year on private sector emergency preparedness with a focus on business continuity planning.

Japan and the United States are cooperating closely in APEC and reaffirm our determination to achieve successful outcomes at the Ministerial and Economic Leaders Meetings in Yokohama.
