On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of the Republic of Mali on your 50th national day celebration this September 22. Our countries share a strong history of partnership, and we join Mali in honoring its history and accomplishments on this festive occasion.

This year, Malians are celebrating independence while preparing for elections. Mali is a model of stability and democracy in sub-Saharan Africa, and your commitment to promoting respect, tolerance, and cultural diversity sets a strong example for the region and the world. We are committed to partnering with the government and people of Mali to promote economic growth, expand access to health care, and improve our common security. The United States will continue working with Mali as we seek to build a brighter future for all our citizens.

I wish the people of Mali a happy golden anniversary and reaffirm the enduring friendship between our nations.
