International Literacy Day 2010

September 8th marked International Literacy Day, and on that day at the United Nations in New York, UNESCO hosted an international conference entitled “Literacy: an Essential Foundation for Development.” Former First Lady of the United States Laura Bush, who is Honorary Ambassador for the United Nations Decade of Literacy, delivered the event’s opening address, followed by comments from UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs Nerissa Cook also participated, underscoring the U.S. commitment to working closely with the United Nations and other international organizations on issues related to education and literacy.
