Date: 09/08/2010 Location: New York City Description: Former First Lady Laura Bush (left) with UNESCO's Director-General Irina Bokova (right) at UNESCO International Literacy Conference. © USUN ImageSeptember 8th marked International Literacy Day, and on that day at the United Nations in New York, UNESCO hosted an international conference entitled “Literacy: an Essential Foundation for Development.” Former First Lady of the United States Laura Bush, who is Honorary Ambassador for the United Nations Decade of Literacy, delivered the event’s opening address, followed by comments from UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova.
