Press Statement
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
August 16, 2010

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of the Gabonese Republic on the 50th anniversary of your National Day this August 17.

For 50 years, Gabon has set an example of sustained peace in Central Africa and demonstrated a strong commitment to regional stability as a mediator and a contributor to peacekeeping efforts. The United States applauds Gabon’s leadership in Africa and internationally on the UN Security Council.

When I met with President Bongo in Washington earlier this year, I assured him the United States would support Gabon as it strives to improve government efficiency, eliminate waste, and fight corruption. We also commend Gabon’s efforts to diversify and build a new green economy. With strong democratic institutions and transparent governance, these efforts will widen the circle of prosperity to more people and create new opportunities for all Gabonese citizens.

On the 50th anniversary of your independence, I wish all the people of Gabon a safe and joyous day of celebration and a peaceful and prosperous future. I look forward to strengthening our cooperation as we continue to work together towards our common goals.
