Press Statement
Philip J. Crowley
Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Public Affairs
Washington, DC
July 13, 2010

We welcome the release of seven political prisoners by the government of Cuba and the announcement by the Archbishop of Havana that additional prisoners could be released in the coming months. We applaud the efforts of the Cuban Catholic Church, Spain and others who have worked towards the release of prisoners of conscience from jail in Cuba. While the United States continues to call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, this is a positive development that we hope will represent a step towards increased respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Cuba. All those released from prison should be free to decide for themselves whether to remain in Cuba or travel to another country.
