"We believe strongly that Africa can have and should have a very positive future for its people, and we want to be the partners who help to realize those dreams...."
-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, June 14, 2010
On June 14, 2010, the U.S. Department of State hosted a Diplomacy Conference on sub-Saharan Africa, the second in a series of public outreach conferences aimed at engaging key constituencies on foreign policy issues. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton delivered closing keynote remarks. The agenda also featured Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of African Affairs Ambassador Johnnie Carson and several other key Administration officials who will engage a cross section of the nongovernmental community on US policy and the most pressing issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. Students from Florida A & M University (Tallahassee, FL), Texas Southern University (Houston, TX), and the University of Central Florida (Orlando, FL) joined the conference to engage Secretary Clinton via video conference.
The Department hosted the first in the series on Latin America on December 11, 2009 at which Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton also delivered keynote remarks. That conference brought together over 250 members of the Hispanic community and civil society and featured Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Maria Otero, Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Arturo Valenzuela, and other senior State Department officials.
