Remarks
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
June 3, 2010

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Sweden on the Kingdom’s National Day.

On this occasion, we reaffirm our friendship and celebrate more than two centuries of commerce and cultural exchange between Sweden and the United States. Since the early settlers of New Sweden, Americans of Swedish descent have made vital contributions to the United States, including such prominent figures as Buzz Aldrin and Greta Garbo. Today our two nations enjoy an enduring and vibrant partnership rooted in shared values and common interests.

The United States honors Sweden’s strong and principled stance advocating for human rights and the rule of law around the world. Your commitment to international development, humanitarian assistance and peacekeeping efforts has made Sweden a valuable and effective partner in addressing global challenges.

I wish the Swedish people the very best on this National Day as we continue to strengthen the bonds between our two nations for years to come.
