Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs Esther Brimmer will lead the U.S. delegation to the UN-Alliance of Civilizations (AoC) Forum, May 28 – 29, in Rio de Janeiro.

The U.S. Department of State announced earlier this month that the United States would join the Alliance of Civilizations Group of Friends. While the United States has sent observer delegations to Alliance meetings and Forums in the past, this is the first event for the United States as a Group of Friends member.

The United States decided to join the Alliance in 2010 to further the AoC’s goals of improved understanding and cooperation among nations and peoples across the world's many cultures, to help counter the forces that fuel polarization and extremism. The goals and activities of the Alliance complement President Obama's vision of active U.S. engagement with other nations and international organizations to advance American security interests and meet the global challenges of the 21st century.

In addition to participating in events at the AoC Forum, on Thursday afternoon Dr. Brimmer will be holding an informal meeting with U.S.-based NGOs and other Americans attending the Forum in order to share ideas and discuss U.S. involvement in the Alliance. Individuals seeking to attend this event should RSVP to the event contacts below.

The Forum is open to credentialed members of the media. For more information on the Forum, please visit www.rioforum.org.
