Press Statement
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
May 14, 2010

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Paraguay as you celebrate your independence day on May 15. As Paraguayans visit the Mausoleum of Heroes, attend religious services, listen to traditional music, and celebrate with your families, the United States joins in honoring your rich history and culture.

The relationship between the United States and Paraguay is rooted in mutual respect and mutual interest. Both of our countries were founded on the ideals of individual liberty and democracy. Our people are bound together by common history and values, and by enduring economic, cultural and familial ties. We are working together as partners on a wide range of issues of both common concern and shared responsibility.

On this occasion, let me reaffirm the commitment of the United States to strengthen and deepen our partnership as we work together to build a peaceful and prosperous future for all our people.
