Following is the text of a joint statement by the United States and Norway issued following the U.S.-Norway Global Issues Dialogue on May 6, 2010:

Begin text:

As part of the Global Issues Dialogue between the Governments of the United States and Norway, representatives from the two countries met on May 5th at the Norwegian Ambassador’s residence to discuss women’s empowerment. State Secretary Gry Larsen led the Norwegian delegation. The U.S. delegation was headed by Melanne Verveer, Ambassador-at-large for Global Women’s Issues and Johnnie Carson, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs.

Norway and the United States are bound by common values, including our commitment to protection and promotion of women. To further this dedication, we discussed ways in which the United States and Norway can work together to combat violence against women and end impunity in areas of conflict, particularly the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and our support to the work of the Special Representative of the Secretary General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, mandated by UN Security Council Resolution 1888. As we approach the 10th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, we discussed our contributions to its implementation, such as through our efforts to promote women’s political participation and access to justice in Afghanistan. The dialogue also covered peacekeeping and protection of civilians.
