International Security Development Programs Protect National Security with Local Law Enforcement Officers
Notice to the Press
On Friday, May 7, 2010, Ambassador David T. Johnson, Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), Representative Patrick J. Kennedy (D-RI) and Representative James R. Langevin (D-RI), and Chief Anthony Silva, Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy Executive Director, will join at the Community College of Rhode Island in Pawtucket, to discuss the Department of State’s role in international security and the development of accountable civilian police forces around the world, and how the State Department’s programs abroad relate to law enforcement officers at home.
The discussion is part of INL Bureau’s efforts to expand its relationships with state, local, and tribal police departments to open lines of communication for best practices for civilian police training, cultivate partnerships between US and foreign law enforcement partners, and as a resource for advice and guidance on efforts to address criminal justice sector reform abroad.
Specifically, Assistant Secretary Johnson is expected to talk about the State Department’s international civilian police training programs and the International Law Enforcement Academies under his charge, State Department police mentor programs, as well as other programs that build the capabilities of key countries whose law enforcement and judicial structures are vulnerable to transnational threats, including terrorism, and whose weaknesses pose a threat to U.S. security and a challenge to U.S. interests.
