Deputy Secretary of State Jacob Lew will welcome a delegation from the African Union as part of the first annual U.S. – African Union High Level Bilateral Meetings. The welcome ceremony will take place in room 1105 of the Harry S Truman Building at 8:50 a.m. on April 21, 2010. Deputy Secretary Lew and Chairman Jean Ping will provide brief remarks.

The Bureau of African Affairs is hosting these talks to add structure to the U.S. – AU relationship and to broaden our level of engagement. The meetings are scheduled for three days.

The AU delegation will discuss the full range of U.S. priorities in Africa, and meet with cabinet officials such as Attorney General Eric Holder, Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, and senior officials from the Department of Defense, Central Intelligence Agency, Office of the United States Trade Representative, Treasury, Commerce, State and the National Security Council.

The welcoming ceremony is open to the press.

All Press will need to enter through the 23rd Street entrance before 8:15 a.m.

Media representatives may attend this event upon presentation of one of the following:
(1) A U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification card (driver's license, passport).
