The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, in partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center and National Geographic Live!, will present a free concert featuring musicians of The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad, on April 22, 2009, 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., at The National Geographic Society’s Grosvenor Auditorium (1600 M Street, NW, Washington, D.C).

This concert is the first in a series of five concerts scheduled from April through December to showcase these talented performers for audiences in the United States. The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad sends ten American quartets abroad to present original American music, including jazz, urban, gospel, and roots. Among quartets from across the United States who auditioned in New York City, ten were selected to represent American culture through concerts, jam sessions, classes, and person-to-person interaction with foreign audiences. These American musical ambassadors follow in the footsteps of legends Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, and other great American jazz performers.

Performing on April 22nd:

Mark Sherman-Tim Horner Quartet - This group has performed internationally for the last five years, with numerous tours through Europe, the United States, and Canada. Its members, each with strong teaching credentials, bring a deeply-rooted post-bop jazz approach to original and standard compositions, which carry on the art form with a high level of invigorating musicianship. Their music is relentless, energetic, and brimming with improvisation. The quartet will tour in Asia.

Oscar Williams Jr. and Perfected Praise - This award-winning gospel ensemble brings a spiritually refreshing sound to uplift and intrigue audiences worldwide. The group combines an array of talents and styles that converge into a cutting-edge melodic sound. Oscar Williams Jr. and Perfected Praise has performed in the Vatican for the Pope, toured with international pop star Elisa, and performed with GRAMMY® winner Jason Mraz. The group has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, including performances in Switzerland, Italy, and Germany, and most recently in the Czech Republic. The quartet will tour in Eastern Europe.
