Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs María Otero and USAID Acting Administrator Michael Yates will brief the press on-the-record, on camera on World Water Day today, March 22, 2010, at 1:00 pm in the Carl T. Rowan Press Briefing Room (Room 2209) of the Department of State.

The mission of World Water Day is to provide safe, affordable and sustainable drinking water, sanitation and hygiene for people around the world. Today, Secretary Clinton renews the U.S. commitment to the issue of water, and delivers a speech at National Geographic detailing the U.S. government’s comprehensive policy on water.

As Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs, Otero oversees the bureaus of Population, Refugee and Migration; Democracy, Human Rights and Labor; Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs; and the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. She also serves as the Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues.

Michael J. Yates currently serves as Acting Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Economic Growth, Agriculture and Trade (EGAT). Dr. Yates joined EGAT in 2009.
