I am delighted to send greetings from Washington as you gather to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the U.S.-Portugal Fulbright Program.

Since 1960 more than 1,300 Portuguese and more than 750 American students, scholars, researchers, and professors have participated in Fulbright exchanges between our two nations. The U.S.-Portugal Fulbright Program counts among its alumni prominent scientists, artists, journalists, policy makers, and educators.

The Fulbright Program stands as a beacon of the strong partnership between the people of Portugal and the United States over the past fifty years. Fulbright exchanges foster leadership, intellectual achievement, innovation -- and they promote mutual understanding and respect between our cultures – all of that is critical for building the better world that Senator Fulbright envisioned.

A young Portuguese student from the University of Texas at Austin, Texas may have said it best when he characterized the Fulbright program as a “legacy from the past and a responsibility toward the future.”

So, happy anniversary Fulbright-Portugal. Thank you for all you’ve done to broaden and deepen this relationship during the last half-century. And I wish you even greater success in the next 50 years.
