QUESTION: What do I need to know about the Olympic Winter Game travel?

DEPUTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY BOND: If you are at the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, the Department of State is here to assist you and provide advice. We believe that a well-informed traveler is a smart and safe traveler. We recommend that you visit our website: travel.state.gov and click on the link Travel to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. This site is your one-stop shopping tool for information on traveling abroad. There you will also learn how to notify us of your upcoming trip so that we can locate you in the event of an emergency. You will find important information on issues relating to health care, transportation, firearms restrictions, security and crime conditions, and warnings to respect local laws while abroad. If you are traveling in Canada, please be mindful of their laws. For example, Driving While Impaired (DWI) is a serious offense in Canada. Any prior conviction, no matter how old or how minor the infraction, is grounds for exclusion from Canada.

Q. In the event of an emergency, how can I reach a consular officer and what can this official do for me?

DEPUTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY BOND: Consuls stand ready to assist U.S. citizens in a variety of emergency situations abroad, including lost and stolen passports, illness, temporary destitution, being the victim of a crime, or arrest. If a U.S. citizen becomes seriously ill or injured abroad, a U.S. consular officer can assist in locating appropriate medical services and informing family or friends.

Travel.state.gov provides contact information for our Consulate in Vancouver and the satellite office in Whistler. Both will be open 7 days a week, with extended public hours during the day in Vancouver. A consular officer will be on call 24/7 from February 10 to March 1, 2010. The Vancouver Consulate General number is: 604-685-4311. The satellite office number in Whistler is: 604-935-4473, and the after-hours number is: 778-788-0867.
