Provincial Reconstruction Team Conference/London Lead-In
In the lead-up to the London conference at which representatives of more than 75 nations and international organizations will look at ways to support the Afghan government in implementing its ambitious security, governance and development agenda, more than 250 delegates from 46 countries met in Prague, Czech Republic. The NGO, media, and government officials in attendance discussed ways in which Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) can coordinate to most effectively deliver results.
With an eye on the London conference’s four key focal points—Security, Reintegration, Governance and Development, and International Cooperation and Coordination—the Prague participants shared lessons learned and identified priority areas for improved collaboration among PRTs, Afghan Government entities, non-governmental organizations, media and the Afghan people.
Grouping their recommendations under the headings of Governance, Economic Development, Civilian-Military Coordination, and Ensuring Effectiveness, the Prague delegates submitted a blueprint for PRTs that included the following: working with existing Afghan plans to promote a sub-national governance policy; encouraging economic stimulation through local procurement and regeneration of agribusiness; and strengthening PRTs’ civilian leadership and expertise.
