Tanya A. Powell is a Public Affairs Specialist in the Office of Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs (PA/PL). Prior to becoming a Public Affairs Specialist, Ms. Powell served as Special Assistant in PA’s Front Office from June 2006 to September 2007. Other positions she has held within the Department include Staff Assistant, Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation(November 2001-June 2006); Staff Assistant, Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (July 2000-November 2001); Staff Assistant, Executive Secretariat Staff Office (April 1998-July 2000); Operations Specialist, Operations Center (September 1997-April 1998); and Secretary, Foreign Service Institute (February 1997-September 1997).

Ms. Powell volunteered for State’s Haiti Task Force. Serving as the Public Affairs representative, she assisted with answering over 600 telephone calls within the first six hours after the earthquake on Tuesday, January 12. She provided the Department’s Spokesman and local and national media representatives with information for briefings and news updates about the status of American citizens and the situation in Haiti.

In her free time, she volunteers as the copy editor for Global Woman Magazine.

Ms. Powell received her B.A. in Mass Media Arts/Print Journalism from the University of the District of Columbia. A native of Washington, D.C., she enjoys dining at local restaurants, cross-stitching, sewing, dancing, reading, and spending time with her family, friends, and her five-pound Toy Fox Terrier, Toi.
