Pakistan, the Middle East, Morocco and Egypt, October 27-November 4, 2009
October 27, 2009 to November 4, 2009
Secretary Clinton went to Pakistan to continue efforts to create a comprehensive relationship with Pakistan that covers a whole range of issues that are important to the people of Pakistan, important to the people of the United States, and to the greater region.
Secretary Clinton and Special Envoy for Middle East Peace Senator George Mitchell held bilateral meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Mahmoud Abbas, in the region.
Senator Mitchell traveled to the region in advance of Secretary Clinton. These meetings built on the intensive work the Administration has engaged in with both sides since the trilateral meeting last month.
As President Obama has said, the Administration is committed to comprehensive peace, including a two-state solution. As Secretary Clinton reported to the President last week, challenges remain as we continue to work with both sides. Her visit reflects the Administration's commitment -- and her personal commitment -- to work through the challenges we face in pursuit of comprehensive Middle East peace.
Secretary Clinton was in Marrakesh, Morocco from November 2-3, 2009 to participate in the 6th Forum for the Future.
The Forum for the Future is a joint initiative of the countries of the Broader Middle East and North Africa region (BMENA) and the industrialized countries of the Group of Eight (G8). It is a unique partnership between governments of the region, the G8, civil society representatives and private sector leaders to discuss and exchange ideas on how to best work together to support progress and expand opportunities for the people of the region.
The Kingdom of Morocco and the United States were the co-hosts of the first Forum for the Future, which took place in Rabat in 2004.
Secretary Clinton then traveled to Cairo. She met with Minister of Intelligence General Suleiman, Foreign Minister Aboul Gheit and President Mubarak. She was joined in Cairo by Special Envoy Mitchell. Special Envoy Mitchell had meetings in Amman, Jordan with King Abdullah and also with President Abbas.
