Remarks
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
September 18, 2009

On behalf of the people of the United States, I extend my congratulations to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis as they celebrate 26 years as an independent nation on September 19. Our two nations are united by our shared commitment to advance democracy and human rights and build a brighter future for all our people.

We are working together as partners to enhance the security and prosperity of the entire Caribbean region. St. Kitts and Nevis is a leader in our common efforts to combat crime and reach out to at-risk youth through the new security initiative announced by President Obama at the 2009 Summit of the Americas. We look forward to deepening that partnership and expanding our cooperation to promote better health, improve education, expand trade, and protect the environment.

On this occasion, I want to reaffirm the enduring friendship of the United States and offer our warmest wishes for the year ahead.
