Meetings With Israeli and Palestinian Leaders
Special Envoy for Middle East Peace
Jerusalem, June 9, 2009
Special Envoy Mitchell: Thank you very much, Mr. Prime Minister, I am very grateful for your courtesy, your hospitality, and your friendship, both personal and as representatives of our two countries. We are two allies, two friends. Our commitment to Israel's security is unshakable and I want you to know that we come here to talk, not as adversaries in disagreement, but as friends in discussion, and we recognize that the issues are complex and many, but we hope that we can work our way through them to achieve the objective that we share with you and that is peace, security, and prosperity throughout the region.
Remarks After Meeting With Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas
Ramallah, June 10, 2009
Special Envoy Mitchell: We are now engaged in serious discussions with our Israeli, Palestinian, and other regional partners to support this effort. The United States is fully committed to working towards a comprehensive peace throughout the Middle East. As President Obama said last week: "America will not turn our backs on a legitimate Palestinian aspiration for dignity, opportunity, and a state of their own."
