The Detroit Passport Agency, which opened its doors on March 16, 2009, was inaugurated Monday, May 11, 2009, by Ambassador Janice L. Jacobs, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs.

The Detroit Passport Agency is located in historic downtown Detroit at 211 West Fort Street, just minutes from the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel. The agency is the twentieth passport issuance facility in the United States and is one of 15 passport agencies open to the public. The Detroit Passport Agency accepts appointments from U.S. citizens who are planning travel within 14 days. It has the capability to issue U.S. passport books on-site to qualifying applicants and will also have the capability to issue the new U.S. passport cards in late Spring 2009.

The Detroit Passport Agency’s location provides gateway access to Canada via the Ambassador Bridge or the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel and its proximity to a major domestic and international airport provides U.S. citizens with a convenient location at which to apply for a passport book or a passport card.

With the final phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) to be implemented on June 1, 2009, the Detroit Passport Agency will greatly enhance our ability to meet the travel needs of our customers in several states along the northern border.
