Question Taken at the February 9, 2009 Daily Press Briefing
February 9, 2009

Question: Was the United States represented at today’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on China in Geneva? If so, by whom?

Answer: Consistent with our recent practice, officers from the U.S. Mission in Geneva have observed the reviews of all countries participating in this UPR round. However, we have not participated in the UPR process. We are mindful of the importance of the UPR process, but the Administration is currently reviewing our policy toward the Human Rights Council and its related activities, including UPR. We have not made any determinations at this time.
