The Office of the Assistant Legal Adviser for Private International Law generally has two unpaid positions (externships) available each semester. Externs work directly with attorneys in conducting research, analyzing issues, preparing memoranda and other documents, developing negotiating positions, and otherwise assisting in the day-to-day work of the office. Applicants for full-time externships must be able to work 32-40 hours per week (15-20 hours for part-time applicants) and must receive academic credit for the externship.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, and externs will be required to obtain a security clearance prior to commencing work. Applicants must possess strong writing and analytical skills. Students who will be in their third year of law school at the time of the externship are strongly preferred. To apply for the 2015-2016 academic year, send a cover letter, resume, transcript, and a legal writing sample to by March 31, 2015. Recommendation letters are welcome but not required. Applicants should indicate in their cover letters which semester they would be available (fall 2015 and/or spring 2016).

Please note that this application process is separate from the general externship program for the Office of the Legal Adviser, the details of which are available here:
