This Pilot project was funded in three states of Brazil--Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, and Paran--where Police Academies reviewed organizational capacity and developed curriculum for promoting tolerance, racial and ethnic sensitivity, and diversity in law enforcement.

Public Safety and Racial Equality Seminar

The U.S. government, Brazilian government, and U.S. civil society co-organized a Public Safety and the Promotion of Racial Equality Seminar on November 15-18, 2010, in Washington, DC. The Seminar and Study Tour focused on the promotion of understanding, cooperation and exchange of information (including best practices) on racial/ethnic sensitivity and human rights in law enforcement and the promotion of equality of opportunity for all. The Brazilian delegation consisted of government representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Relations and Justice, Secretariat for the Promotion of Racial Equality (SEPPIR), and law enforcement personnel. The U.S. Department of Justice, FBI, local/state law enforcement, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and civil society organizations represented the United States.
