On April 19, 2009, at the Summit of the America’s in Port of Spain, Trinidad, President Obama announced his intention to strengthen the United States’ security cooperation with the Caribbean. Since then, the United States has met regularly with representatives of its Caribbean partners to lay the foundation for this strengthened partnership. On May 27, 2010, Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Arturo Valenzuela, hosted the Inaugural Caribbean-U.S. Security Cooperation Dialogue to deepen the President’s commitment, and to begin the institutionalization of a lasting and committed partnership founded in mutual respect and common interests. Since 2009, four high level security cooperation dialogues have been held in Washington and in the Caribbean.
